However, the real reason why I’m writing this Tomb Raider Reloaded review is just to let you know how good this game is! For those of you who have played previous games in the Tomb Raider franchise, you should be familiar with the storyline and the gameplay mechanics. And the good news is: it’s still as thrilling as it was before.
Playing as heroine Maya, you’ll be a part of an intricate story involving a struggle between good and evil. You’ll also get to explore the gorgeous island paradise that Tomb Raider refers to as ‘the Glade’.
Tomb Raider Reloaded Features
Tomb Raider: Reloaded features all the exciting parts of playing Tomb Raider right in a new format. You’ll notice that, like the original series, the puzzles are not the same puzzles you’ve grown to love.
Instead, the island is broken into different regions, each home to a number of tomb raider camps. As you trek through the landscape, you’ll find that each area has its own layout, composed of multiple objectives that are timed to go up the vertical shaft while avoiding enemy fire.
Switch Between Tombs
Unlike the first game, Tomb Raider Reloaded allows players to switch between tombs by using ‘power springs’. Although this can be used to access previously inaccessible tombs, using it requires a lot more strategy.
In addition, the platforming is more reactive, allowing players to avoid dangerous obstacles and navigate through tight spaces. If you’re more into platforming, you’ll find that some of the more difficult levels require you to scale large rock faces and navigate through narrow passageways.
Speaking Of Gameplay
Speaking of gameplay, one of the best things about Tomb Raider Reloaded is the complete overhaul of the game’s controls. The new layout allows you to use the keyboard to aim, as well as the various side buttons for inventory and combat.
Not only does this allow you to gain a greater sense of adventure, but you’ll find that it makes the game more immersive than before, especially if you’re going after higher score missions. Of course, using the keyboard as a control allows players to get in better positions for attacks, but the new additions make playing as a survivor a lot more rewarding.
Experience Level
The combat in Tomb Raider Reloaded is also a lot more intense than before. Although there are still plenty of tombs to infiltrate and kill, the difficulty level has been raised a bit – enough to keep players coming back for more, regardless of their experience level.
The combat includes both gun combat and melee attacks, allowing you to not only take down large enemies but also defend yourself against a growing army of weaker enemies who may enter the level.
Character’s Wings
One of the additions included with Tomb Raider Reloaded is the ability to jump between platforms using the character’s wings. This adds an element of verticality to the gameplay, making it more thrilling than before. Unfortunately, it’s also a bit buggy, which makes it less enjoyable overall. Other additions include the ability to lock-block, where you’ll need to position yourself so that you cannot be attacked from behind.
This, along with the improved combat abilities, makes it still a bit too much of a challenge to be able to complete without help. It’s still a great game to play alone, but the additions help make it easier to have some fun with co-op play.
Conclusion
Despite these bits and pieces, there is still one major problem in Tomb Raider Reloaded: the lack of variety between the characters. The same basic enemies – spider bots, eyeballs, crabs, spiders, and vipers – appear all throughout the game, even when you aren’t playing a specific character.
This is frustrating because there is just so much to explore in this game. If there were only a few different maps, this wouldn’t be such a problem. Instead, developers only chose to fill in the spaces between the different levels with equally interesting monsters and objects, resulting in an uneven experience across the board.
